Due To Ever More Stringent Environmental Regulation in the harbor area the ‘Heavy Container Corridor’ was created to aid the movement of overweight 40’ or larger ocean going containers on pre-designated city streets in & around the Port of Los Angeles & Long Beach region.

The City of Los Angeles, the City of Long Beach, the State of California, and the Department of Public Works have approved a permanent measure allowing permits to be granted for overweight container loads in the Port Region.
The permits allow the gross vehicle weight of the truck, chassis, container and contents to be at 95,000 pounds/43,130 kilograms (with proper equipment).
The ‘Overweight Corridor’ is the network of main highway routes that operates under the jurisdiction of regional municipalities and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

The actual Port Authority doesn’t issue transit use permits for heavier weight ocean going containers.
Those are issued by several city agencies, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Carson, as well as by Caltrans – all of whom permit & manage their portion of the transportation network connected to the ports.
Once they issue the actual permits any trucks transporting oceangoing containers that exceed 80,000 lbs. are allowed to legally travel on designated roads across their city.
